British Glass Biennale Award 2006
at the International Festival of Glass
The winner of the British Glass Biennale Award 2006 is Max Jacquard, for his poetic work “For my Lost Loves III: The ongoing Moment”.
His piece was chosen from over 170 exhibits by 100 selected glass artists as the 'best in show'. Max received his £5,000 award from Lynda Waltho MP at a packed official opening of the show on August 24th.
The jury admired Max’s work as a lyrical masterpiece, a deft blend of visual poetry, technical brilliance and deceptive simplicity. The jury were unanimous in their praise of this exceptional piece, and speaking to the various artists present after the announcement, it was a popular choice. Many attending expressed their delight in the piece as they were drawn to it in amongst this high quality exhibition of our current studio output in the UK.
Chair of the Jury, Dr David Prytherch, said in a statement about the jurying process, "Overall, the standard of work submitted was very high and it would have been possible to mount a show 50% larger had we the resources. It is an enormously encouraging sign of the vigour and creativity alive in today’s studio glass art in the UK.
Most encouraging, for myself and the other members of the jury, is the fact that alongside the established names, there are many new artists, some just graduating, some already beginning to make a name for themselves, but all producing work that is exciting, innovative and technically outstanding. The future of UK studio glass has rarely looked so good, as this exhibition and the superb catalogue show us, with an extremely diverse range of works spanning every technique and style of glasswork I can conceive of, (plus a few I would never have imagined!)."
