Nomoda Ebenizer Djaba is known to everyone as Cedi. He is the director and owner of the Retado Bead Industry in Odumasi/Krobo, Ghana, a family business that he became involved in as a child working with his grandfather.
The Krobo are known for their beads and Cedi is one of the best known beadmakers who sells beads both locally and internationally. He has a large workshop with several employees. The process involves crushing glass, such as bottles or broken window panes, funneling it into clay moulds and firing in a wood burning kiln. The beadmakers make the process look easy, but it takes years of apprenticeship and practice to be recognized as an accomplished artisan.
Participants on this masterclass will learn how to build a wood-fired mud kiln from scratch.
Cedi will then teach the class how to make beads Ghanaian style. This involves pouring ground glass (recycled glass from ground bottles can be used – apparently Pond’s cold cream jars and Philips milk of magnesia are popular in Ghana), into clay moulds with a cassava stalk inserted in the middle which will burn out leaving a hole in the bead. After the beads have been fired, you will learn how to shape and finish the beads. Much of the skill is in the pour of powder into the mould as this is crucial to the final design of the bead and a quality bead will have a design through the whole bead, not just along the surface. We can’t guarantee the cold cream and milk of magnesia jars* but we can guarantee a highly enjoyable experience.
* We shall be using commercially available powders and frit for ease of preparation, though participants are welcome to bring their own recycled powders to experiment with.
