Paul Marioni is known as an innovator in the glass world – over his 37 year career he has pushed techniques to their limits, regularly redefining what is possible to achieve with the medium. He explores themes to do with human nature – what we do, why we do it, how we ornament ourselves, our heroes, historical moments, humour, sexuality, exotic and lost cultures, spiritualism without religion and, overall, a constant questioning.

Paul has completed numerous public and private commissions and has taught at Penland and Pilchuck, amongst others. He is also a three-time recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship and the 2004 winner of the Glass Art Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Without sacrificing the immediacy and spontaneity of the process of sand casting, participants will learn the technical skills and control of form, colour and effect necessary to achieve as much precision of outcome as with kiln casting. Through extensive demonstrations and a focus on the individual goals of each participant, Paul will enable participants to turn their visions into reality. Technique will become an expressive vehicle, not a barrier to creativity.
