Christian Schmidt has changed the traditional way of glass engraving into a new, spontaneous, story-telling medium. Through his distinctive and characteristically witty manner of work on coloured overlay glass he is now one of the most well-known glass engravers of the international studio glass scene. He was trained at the Glasfachschule in Zwiesel (Germany) and has been working as a freelance glass artist since 1986.
This workshop expands on three-dimensional drawing on a glass surface through the skill of engraving. This
spontaneous yet meditative, slow-moving process will open the door to new stories and images. Glass, in all of its transparency, light and shadow play, worked on a coloured overlay, provides a wide range of possibilities for the creative imagination.
Participants will use an engraving machine with stone and diamond wheels as well as a sandblaster and other tools and will have the chance to experiment with flat glass, objects or vases and both transparent and coloured overlay engraving.
