Holy Trinity Church Wordsley was built in 1831 to accommodate a rapidly increasing industrial population, much of it engaged in the glass trade. As the parish church of Wordsley it became a focus for the ‘hatching, matching and despatching’ of glassmaking parishioners high and low. In the church and churchyard are monuments of a number of notable glassmakers, including John Northwood, his grave including a representation of his famous ‘Portland’ vase. Whilst an area known as ‘paupers corner’ was the focus of a scandal in the early 1900’s when decaying body parts were discovered lying in the open!
