Ian Hankey is a graduate of the Royal College of Art with many years of experience in leading British glass studios. Also acquiring the highest level of craft skills as technical instructor in hot glass at the RCA, he is now working as a lecturer in Glass and Professional Practices at Plymouth College of Art within the subject of sustainability and environmental issues in the crafts.
In this class students will build a small prototype glass furnace, with the aim of showing how it is possible to build and maintain your own equipment economically, whilst developing practical skills to produce a viable business at a fraction of the cost of conventional practice. We will discuss upcycling, experiment with colour melts and melt glass using recycled materials.
Students will also have some time to experience making glassware, using this furnace, without the aid of an assistant.
